The solutions-based processing of PSC enables the use of a roll-to-roll process for printing on flexiblesubstrates with potential deposition speeds of hundreds of meters per minute, as has been achievedin film coating industries. Even with more moderate line speeds this will facilitate low-cost high-volume production for rapid deployment of PV modules and offers the opportunity to produce PSC on a TW scale.
In contrast, the low throughput, batch-based production of silicon panels is insufficient to meet the future demand for solar PV modules.
This quick manufacturing process also has advantages in counteracting the comparatively short lifespan of current PSC with fast replacement technology and is adept at incorporating the numerous improvements in PSC technology which have already occurred, and continue to occur, at a rapid rate. In fact, the fast speed with which progress is being made in PSC technology can negate the necessity of PSC modules to have similar longevity to silicon cells.
